Geneva/Tokyo: This week the World Health Organisation WHO and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) are holding an expert consultation on the risks of fish consumption and – encouraged by a coalition of environmental groups – for the first time the health risks associated with consuming contaminated meat and blubber from whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans).

New footage of rare Baird’s beaked whale landing in Chiba, Japan
For immediate release, Wednesday 29th July 2009. Campaigners from the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) witnessed and filmed Japanese whalers landing a Baird’s beaked whale after a hunt that occurred Friday. The 10 metre whale was landed in Wada, near Tokyo, early on Saturday morning.

EIA warns that revised European regulation on ozone-depleting chemicals leaves loopholes for illegal trade
AS the European Union enters the final phase of revising its ozone depleting substances (ODS) regulation. EIA is cautioning that the new regulation does not take account of past mistakes and continues to allow loop holes for illegal trade in controlled chemicals. It also allows for production and export of large quantities of ODS to developing countries precisely at a time when efforts are underway to try to creduce and eliminate consumption of these chemicals.

Japan's Whaling Loses Support From Commercial Fisheries Companies
Japan’s fourth largest fisheries company, Kyokuyo, has pledged to stop its sale of whale meat in Japan. Its decision follows a campaign led by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), Humane Society International (HSI) and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Kyokuyo is thought to have sold at least 10 million cans of whale meat each year in Japan, plus frozen whale products.

Ask U.S. Supermarket to Protect the Ozone Layer and Human Health
Ask your supermarket to stop selling food that destroys the ozone layer. Supermarkets can protect human health and global environment by ensuring that the produce they sell is not grown with methyl bromide, a chemical that eats away the Earth’s protective ozone layer. Increases in ultraviolet radiation due to a thinning ozone layer may cause skin cancer, cataracts, harm the immune system and upset the fragile balance of entire ecosystems.
