On the 28th September 2005 the President of Kenya announced that Amboseli National Park, which lies at the base of Mount Kilamanjaro and is home to over 1,200 elephants, is to be downgraded from its status of National Park to that of National Reserve.

Hong Kong Applies a Heavy Sentence to Illegal Ivory Case
London; A shop located in Kowloon, Hong Kong, was fined over £2,000 for possessing 0.863kg of ivory products without a license. Based on information provided by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), and following an investigation by Hong Kong’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), conviction was secured on the 5th May 2004.

Major Breakthrough in China’s Fight against Illegal Ivory Trade
London; Nearly 300 kilograms of ivory has been seized in Guangzhou, China, during joint enforcement operations carried out by China’s Endangered Species Import and Export Management Office and State Forestry Administration. The operation was based on information provided by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

African Nations Unite to Uphold a Ban on Ivory Trade
Kenya, formerly a lone African voice defending the ban, won the support from others- Representatives from Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Tunisia and Uganda pledged support to Kenya’s firm stance on keeping the ban at a two-day meeting in March.
