EIA ON CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world. A mere 2°C rise in temperature will place 30% of species at risk of extinction; while shortages of food and water could trigger massive movements of people leading to migration, conflict and famine. We need to take urgent measures to slow down and reduce the extent of the climate crisis.

Through our campaigns EIA has already had an impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and on worldwide efforts to mitigate climate change, and we are continually looking at new ways our unique investigative approach can contribute to tackling climate change.

Global environment campaign

EIA’s award-winning investigations into the illegal trade in CFCs have not only benefited the ozone layer, but reduced the use of these powerful global warming agents. Our involvement in securing an early phase-out of refrigerant gases like HCFCs could save emissions of up to 16 billion tonnes of CO2-equivalent over the coming decades, more than 20 times the UK’s annual emissions.

Recently, EIA’s Chilling Facts campaign has highlighted the climate changing potential of the cooling chemicals used by your local supermarkets. We are campaigning for their replacement with climate-friendly alternatives – take action here.

Preventing deforestation

Deforestation accounts for around 20% of all global emissions. EIA’s forest campaigns have helped to secure protected areas of forest and led to the development of ground-breaking laws to stop the sale of illegal timber.

Our efforts to protect endangered species have also had an important role in protecting forests by highlighting their importance in maintaining biodiversity. Our investigations have also helped stop unsustainable industrial exploitation in habitat areas.

Monitoring biofuel plantations

EIA is actively monitoring land-use change in Indonesia, and in particular the development of palm oil plantations for biofuels. Far from being a solution to climate change, inappropriate production of biofuels may actually make the problem worse by destroying forests.
