A Future Without Forests? - Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae)
Until this century, three subspecies of the tiger (Panthera tigris) roamed Indonesia's forests. Intensive hunting and the loss of native habitat has led to the extinction of both the Bali tiger (P.t. balica) and the Javan tiger (P.t. sondaica) which were endemic to the islands of Bali and Java respectively. Today only the Sumatran tiger (P.t. sumatrae) survives in Indonesia. It is close to extinction with potentially viable sub-populations totalling fewer than 400 animals, largely restricted to five national parks.42 A further hundred tigers live in unprotected areas which will soon be lost to agriculture.43 |
