International Trade - UK: "Operation Charm" starts to bite
In an EIA survey of six pharmacies in London and eight in Glasgow and Edinburgh in October and November 1997, EIA investigators failed to find any tiger products for sale.
This encouraging result is partly due to "Operation Charm", a police operation started in February 1995 which has involved the Metropolitan Police, the Greater Manchester Police and the West Midlands Police. They react to information gathered by a handful of dedicated police Wildlife Crime Units and Wildlife Liaison Officers.
Officers from "Operation Charm" are the first to point out that, although EIA's results are encouraging, there is an ongoing problem with endangered species trade through the UK.
