National Update - Meetings, Recommendations
In addition to the Indian Board for Wildlife meetings (March and July 1997) the central government Tiger Crisis Cell met at the end of October 1996 and several important meetings have been held including meetings of the Project Tiger Steering Committee, the Chief Wildlife Wardens of the States and Project Tiger Field Directors. All these meetings were attended by official and non-official members. Many practical recommendations were made, with some points being consistently raised including:
-
the funding of tiger reserves and how to get the money to them more efficiently and an increase in the budget for Project Tiger to fully implement the many other recommendations.
-
the implementation of the Subramanium Committee Report (primarily concerned with anti-poaching and intelligence gathering) with assistance from the Home Ministry where required.
-
the need to bring six of the Tiger Reserves, which suffer from serious insurgency problems, under the direct control of the Director of Project Tiger.
-
the need to review all development projects which may have an adverse affect on tigers and their habitat.
-
the need to ensure that all protected areas are fully staffed and equipped and that final notification procedures are initiated with priority.
-
the need for tiger habitat outside of protected areas to be managed appropriately.
-
the need for greater outreach and awareness to all communities, especially greater co-operation with those living in and around protected areas. The Prime Minister was requested to make a national appeal to the public for their support.
