Poaching & Trade - Poaching and Trade in the Tiger State

With more tigers than any other State, Madhya Pradesh offers plenty of opportunity for those driven by the lucrative trade in tiger and other wildlife parts. Official records of poaching incidents and seizures are not easy to obtain and much of the information available comes via NGOs and concerned individuals in the field.

Data gathered by NGOs like the Wildlife Protection Society of India reveal the tip of the iceberg and their records show that those caught with tiger products are very often trading in other wildlife parts. A review of their data from 1996-19983 indicates that in Jagdalpur and other areas in Bastar around Indravati Tiger Reserve there are active poachers and traders. It also comes as no surprise that there have been many seizures in the railhead town of Satna, not far from Panna and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserves.
