Madhya Pradesh: The Tiger State - The Tiger State Foundation Society
In addition to the Tiger State Committee and the Tiger Cell, the State government set up the Tiger State Foundation Society in 1997. The purpose of this body was to attract funds from external donors, national and international, private and government, to assist with the implementation of the recommendations of the Tiger State Committee.
To date, this Society has proven itself to be nothing more than another government broken promise.
It is chaired by the State Forest Minister, and includes senior State Forest Department officials, the chairman of the Tiger Cell, the State Secretaries of the Tourism and Publicity Departments and four non-official members nominated by the State government. At the time of publication the Society has raised Rs35,000 (US$833.00) but it is unknown what this money has been used for.
In the appeal to donors, the members concede that there is a "lucrative international market and highly influential international traffickers are involved in illicit trade in tigers and other endangered species". They also attribute the serious decline in the tiger population to the "continuous fragmentation and destruction of its habitat" due to "diversion of forest land for development works and urbanisation and encroachment".
The Society acknowledges that although "tiger habitats have been secured in National Parks and Tiger Reserves, large areas of forests lying outside the protected area network are highly disturbed and prone to fragmentation and destruction".
