ENFORCEMENT ASSISTANCE: IVORY

Between 1996 and 1998 EIA assisted in the rehabilitation of the Maputo Elephant Reserve in Mozambique. As part of a two-year project, EIA provided on-site support and funding to rebuild the infrastructure of the reserve after a decade of civil war. EIA also provided funding and training support for wildlife staff and their families including a school and clinic located in the reserve itself.

EIA provides ongoing administrative and communication support to the South Luangwa Conservation Society (SLCS) previously known as RATZ. Set up to provide support for an overstretched wildlife authority and working alongside, and sometimes in place of, National Parks staff, SLCS supply logistical and personnel back-up in the fight against poaching and snaring in and around South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. In an area of limited opportunity SLCS provides training, education and employment to individuals from the local communities. EIA’s continued support and objectives are to establish an effective anti-poaching body and to encourage improved environmental and wildlife conservation practices among the main stakeholders of this area, the Zambian people themselves.
