Everyone needs a holiday. But what's the true cost of your trip?
EIA's Guide to Responsible Travelling: Making Your Summer Break Environmentally and Wildlife Friendly.
Do:
Try to reduce your impact on the global environment, by carbon offsetting. Donating directly to a charity fighting climate change may well be the most effective use of your money.
Reduce your impact on the local community at your destination, consider using a responsible travel company.
Think about travelling by train. This has a lower carbon load than flying. If you do fly, why not take public transport, or the hotel's shared van, instead of a cab to and from the airport?
Invest in a long camera lens and binoculars if you plan on watching wildlife. This way you can see animals in their natural habitats at a distance that will not disturb them.
Let your hotel’s housekeeping department know you want to reuse your sheets and towels. This will help reduce water, energy, and detergent use.
Don’t:
Be tempted by souvenirs made from wild animal products, including skins, ivory, tortoise shell or bone.
Buy any wooden carvings unless you know exactly where the wood is from.
Buy any garments using 'Shahtoosh'. This wool comes from a critically endangered species of Tibetan antelope and any international trade is banned.
Buy anything made from coral. A number of species are endangered. It is very difficult to identify the type of coral that has been used to make a necklace or a pair of earrings.
